Houzz 2017 Kitchen Trends

When Houzz releases a new kitchen report we’re always eager to get really stuck into it and understand how our own projects compare to the wider trends going on in the world of kitchen design. We keep our ear close to the ground when it comes to upcoming interior trends, however Davonport kitchens are truly built to last a lifetime, so changing trends and passing fads have never been our core marketplace. Many of our clients choose timelessness and classic elegance over the interior fashion of the moment and according to the Houzz 2017 Kitchen Trends Study there’s still plenty of demand for classic, timeless cabinetry and a room designed for all the family.
Layout & design
So you’ve found your forever home and it’s nearly perfect for you and your lifestyle. However, even in a dream home there’s often the need to make adjustments. The Houzz report found that 63% of people increased the size of their kitchen, something we frequently deal with in our projects. Coinciding with this, open plan living remains a popular choice with 59% of people opening the kitchen up to more indoor space and 52% of people opening up the kitchen to make the most of outdoor space. So whether it’s a purpose built extension designed to incorporate a kitchen/ living room with access to the garden, or simply putting in some bi-fold doors to the garden, the kitchen is growing in size and becoming less and less hidden away.
In our initial conversations with clients we often start to discuss a kitchen wish list – standout features that are all important to achieving their dream kitchen. According to Houzz, 42% of people cited a kitchen island as a top kitchen feature for their own space; furthermore 34% were planning to incorporate a breakfast bar in their new kitchen. In our own experience kitchen islands and breakfast bars are in fact far more popular than this. The ever popular kitchen pantry also features on Houzz’s top built in features list with 40% of people surveyed wanting one in their own kitchen. Whether it’s a walk in larder, traditional butler’s pantry or a more contemporary corner pantry, there’s no denying that pantries and larders are becoming increasingly popular.
When it comes to kitchen trends and fashions, colour is one of the most fluid and changeable aspects of design. Annually Pantone release a ‘Colour of the Year’ which tends to sky rocket in popularity and become a strong feature in interiors for the following 12 months. 2017’s colour of the year is ‘Greenery’ – a fresh, vivid shade of green. Off the back of this we’ve seen a surge in green kitchens of all hues and shades, and we must admit that done well, a green kitchen is truly beautiful. Despite these fashionable and on trend colours, Houzz found the most popular kitchen cabinet colour was white (31%) closely followed by grey (27%). These classic muted tones are understandably popular – creating a neutral and timeless framework that can be easily updated with accents of other hues.
Renovating your kitchen will of course update the aesthetics of your home, but it’s so much more than that. For many of our clients, designing their new kitchen is simultaneously designing a multi-functional family space to bring together generations and be the backdrop to a lifetime of memories. Unsurprisingly then, Houzz found an impressive 69% of people claimed to spend more family time in the kitchen after undergoing a remodel. 56% of people admitted to using the kitchen for more work/study and 51% now entertain more having installed a new kitchen. The message is clear; the kitchen is an increasingly multi-functional space and a core part of the home designed to bring people together.
