Have you decorated your kitchen ready for Christmas yet..?

Richard Davonport | 12 December 2014

After fourteen years of cooking in a small, badly lit kitchen Mair decided enough was enough ‘it was in a dire need of refurbishment’ says Mair with feeling. ‘Dark oak furniture and a slate floor made the room feel gloomy, especially as there was little natural light’.

Together Mair and husband Andrew began re-thinking the space. ‘We knocked down the porch area and through an internal wall extended the kitchen. This created space for a dining area surrounded by big glass doors and windows that overlook the garden,’ she explains. The new space is filled with light, while the wide windows create an instant connection with the plant filled, stone walled garden.

White painted walls and natural stone floor create a simple backdrop to the room. ‘Parts of the house date back to the 1800’s so it has quite a lot of character,’ explains Mair. ‘We wanted a modern kitchen but in a style that lends itself to an old house.’

The Davonport designer suggested cabinetry featuring a refined shaker door with an elegant bead detailing to create a classic look, in keeping with the country style of the house.’ Mair opted for a very soft, creamy white for the furniture and teamed it with an island painted in pale grey, with hints of lavender to highlight it as the rooms focal point. The difference in colour is subtle, sophisticated and adds quite a modern feel to the room.

The main storage prep areas run around the walls of the room, the island takes centre stage. Sweeping along one side is a curved oak breakfast bar with a matching book-matched oak panel below.

Sub Zero and Wolf appliances

Top of the range Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, designed to cope well with the meals for large numbers, were chosen by Mair, who enjoys making all kinds of recipes. ‘I love the light feeling in here and having the design based around the island, make an inviting room not just a space for cooking. It’s a place to perch for a chat, read the paper or enjoy a glass of wine with friends.

This Period home in Wales has been given a new lease of life with some good structural decisions and Davonport’s Audley range of kitchen cabinetry. Hand painted in the home with Farrow & Ball’s Slipper satin and Dove tail, it’s finished with accents of character oak, pewter handles. A powerful dual fuel Wolf range provide professional style and flexible cooking option, whilst the Sub-Zero fridge freezer and wine storage are designed to make entertaining easy, all in time for Christmas….
