Introducing Lam Lighting to Davonport
Our owner and founder, Richard Davonport established the Davonport brand with exacting standards, a sharp eye for detail, and an unwavering insistence on the very highest standards. Therefore, at our heart is a true passion and respect for high quality, authentic craftsmanship.
With the numerous national lockdowns due to Covid-19, the last 12 months have been an incredibly challenging time for many businesses. However, in some cases, the time to slow down and reflect on life has sparked new ideas, spurred creativity, and encouraged people to pursue their dreams.
It is in this vein that we are excited to introduce our collaboration with new, local ceramic lighting brand, Lam Lighting!
Having worked freelance as the brand manager at major period lighting company, Jim Lawrence in Suffolk for the past 12 years, David Lam was responsible for photographing and marketing the lighting designs. He brought in Hannah Thompson to assist with the volume of work and then proceeded to take on the photography and branding for several other lighting companies, including a leading British architectural lighting company.
At the time Julie (Lam, David’s wife) is a ceramicist and they were also helping with marketing her fine art pieces, and that’s how they all began working collaboratively.
“In the atmosphere of Covid and with lockdown occurring, the whole situation gave us the opportunity to step back and take a view of what we were doing” says Hannah. “We knew that we loved lighting and lighting design but had our own ideas on how we might be able to start something new and progressive.”
The pandemic made us re-evaluate our priorities and gave us the chance to focus our energy on the new brand. We knew that ‘local’ and ‘British made’ were important factors to us, and craft skills were an essential element. We knew that we wanted to produce lighting sustainably with an ethical conscience, and we knew we could design lights that were beautiful both aesthetically and in materials. During the first few weeks of lockdown 1.0, we took the decision to start Lam Lighting. David produced sketches of our first designs and Julie set to work on creating them in her garden ceramics studio. It took about 10 months to perfect those simple designs and we have spent the last few months photographing them, creating the website and marketing materials ready for our launch this spring.”
