Giving your bespoke kitchen the personal touch

The beauty of commissioning a bespoke kitchen is more than just having the opportunity to choose a design that complements your home perfectly. Of course, selecting the style, colour and finish of your cabinets is the main decision – but it’s also about having the freedom to personalise your space beyond the basics: Making choices about the finer details, so it reflects who you are and how you live.

Our designers are well versed in getting to the very heart of a client’s needs, to ensure that the finished result ticks all boxes. But what are the main ways in which you can add your own stamp to a kitchen? Let’s take a look.

Tailor your cabinetry and layout

Many homes today use the kitchen as so much more than just a place to cook and eat. So when it comes to planning your design, think about your priorities and shape your cabinets around them. Firstly, the style of your storage can be adapted to suit your individual needs – from deep pan drawers for keen cooks to beautiful glazed cabinets to show off your favourite glassware. From intricately crafted pantries designed to accommodate everything from a dedicated breakfast station to elegant glassware storage for entertaining in style, the options are many and varied when it comes to choosing a bespoke kitchen.

Customising your bespoke kitchen cabinetry is also part and parcel of creating the perfect bespoke design that fits in with your life. For a kitchen that doubles as space to entertain, for example, a bespoke drinks cabinet can be the icing on the cake. Busy family mornings can become streamlined with a breakfast station. You could make morning coffee a ritual with a tailor-made coffee nook, complete with cosy seating and a high-end coffee machine in its own cabinet. If you work from home, space to stow your laptop and somewhere comfortable to sit are key – while you can make homework a little less of a chore with seating and worktop space at the right height for little legs.

These choices are all part of adapting the layout to suit the location of the kitchen within your home, too. Ensuring your hob is equipped with high-performance extraction might be your goal if your kitchen is in the centre of your property – whereas for a kitchen that overlooks the garden, you’ll want to make sure seating or your island is positioned to take in the view.

Choose kitchen hardware and glazing you love

Whether you choose a classic and traditional or modern and contemporary kitchen, the hardware you add will instantly infuse your personality into the room. Think of your cabinets as a blank canvas. You can take them in a more modern direction by choosing taps and handles that are linear, like a bar handle in a sleek, on-trend finish. Or embrace a period look with heritage style hardware, like a soft cup handle in a warm tone. Pairing the finish of your handles with finer details such as taps, sink overflows, or bar stools helps to create a sense of cohesion throughout the room and unify the overall kitchen design.

Glass is a remarkably versatile material in bespoke kitchen design, with the potential to elevate both the look and feel of a space. Pairing different glass types thoughtfully can add texture, character, and even solve practical design challenges. For example, incorporating wire mesh glass into cabinetry introduces an eclectic, industrial edge, while fluted or reeded glass not only throws light around the room but also gently obscures what lies behind – perfect for when cabinets aren’t immaculately organised.

Glass also works beautifully as a splashback, particularly behind sinks or cookers. Antique mirror splashbacks are a standout option – their textured finish helps conceal water marks and food splashes, all while bouncing natural light around the room to create a brighter, more spacious feel. In smaller, more intimate kitchens, this can be particularly effective.

Include your unique mix of appliances

You can also personalise your bespoke kitchen design by choosing a combination of appliances that are a step up from the ordinary. For a kitchen that’s all about entertaining, a wine fridge might be top of your wish list. Cooking for large numbers? Try doubling up on appliances – like two dishwashers to keep on top of the washing up and keep the space tidy. A built-in coffee machine feels like a real treat – but if enjoying a barista style brew is an important part of your routine, then why not? At Davonport, we work with the cream of coffee machine specialists, Miele, so you can bring the aroma of freshly ground beans into your home and brew the perfect coffee.

Pot filler

A pot filler can be a great way to make cooking more convenient – while a boiling water tap does away with the need for kettle, to keep your work tops clutter free. It’s all  these little touches that can make such a difference to the way your kitchen functions for you. What might seem like an unnecessary luxury for one person, can make life easier for another.

At Davonport, the process for designing your bespoke kitchen has been refined for over 30 years – so we can guide you through all the options, as well as giving you a little inspiration if you need a hand. We want you to be delighted with the result – and that means knowing that your kitchen reflects everything you want from it. You can find out more about the process here.
