Hot Taps: Options, Positioning & What to Consider

HOT TAPS; OPTIONS, POSITIONING AND WHAT TO CONSIDER

Since the origin of the boiling water tap (also known as a hot tap) their popularity has steadily grown; not only do they save time and energy, they are financially economic and much safer than kettles in many ways. At Davonport around 80% of our projects feature a hot tap. Not only are they ultimately practical but thanks to the wide variety of styles available they suit modern and classic style kitchens alike.

THE BENEFITS OF BOILING WATER TAPS

Perhaps the most obvious benefit is the speed of a boiling water tap versus a kettle. With a hot tap you get boiling water in an instant; there’s no waiting around for the water to heat. You might think that keeping the water at a constant, hot temperature uses more energy than a standard kettle; however this is not the case. A hot tap actually uses less power than a kettle and it means that you don’t have the clutter and wasted worktop space that a kettle creates.

As well as delivering a hot cup of tea in moments, a hot tap is also a great cooking tool. It speeds up the cooking time of pasta and rice by enabling you to add hot water directly to the pan – no waiting for it to boil on the hob. There are even entire recipes that only require a boiling water tap! Some hot taps also offer filtered chilled and sparkling water, so it can also be used a luxury drinking tap.

CONSIDERATIONS

There are a few things to consider if you opt to have a hot tap in your new kitchen. The main thing is the size of the unit that goes in the sink base. Depending on the brand and model of hot tap, some of the units can take up almost an entire cupboard so this needs to be considered in terms of factoring in additional storage elsewhere – something your kitchen designer will plan for you.

As well as this, the physical location of the hot tap is important. Many people position them over their main sink whereas others position theirs over a prep sink on an island. There are no hard and fast rules; it depends partly on the size, layout and design of the room and partly on how you envisage using your hot tap most. If you’re using it predominantly for cooking, then on a sink nearest the hob is usually most convenient, and you might want to include it on the same sink as a normal tap.

Alternatively, if its main use is going to be for making drinks, you might want to have it on its own sink or font, away from the cooking area where it could interfere with cooking activity. If this is the case, then you may also consider a hot tap which also provides filtered cold and sparkling water. We have a tap which offers this combination in our showroom; please come and visit to see it in action.
