The fluted kitchen trend – How this can add a flourish of style to your kitchen.

Reeded and fluted glass has already made its mark on homes – giving a nod to elegant 30s style as well as offering a thoroughly on-trend finishing touch. But the fluted kitchen trend has spread its wings and is now one of the go-to details for kitchens. Adding texture that’s understated yet distinctive, the beauty of this feature is that it’s timeless, too. So whether you love a minimal, contemporary kitchen or have a traditional design in mind, fluting could be just the detail you’re looking for.

Choosing to have a bespoke kitchen design means you can incorporate little details like this effortlessly – and the team at Davonport are already on the case. Let’s take a look at where the fluted trend can work its magic.

The Fluted Kitchen Island

Fluted kitchen

In an otherwise simple kitchen – from Shaker style to handle-less and modern – bringing in fluted detail on an island can add a new dimension to a tried-and-tested look. It can introduce an architectural feel to a contemporary space or soften the lines in a classic room. Whether you go for the same paint colour as your cabinets or a contrasting warm wood finish, the options are many and varied. And because an island is a stand-alone piece – it’s a great place to include fluting without dominating a room.

Its versatility doesn’t end there. The almost organic lines of a scalloped fluted design work perfectly on a curved island, while the uniform vertical slatted take on the trend is suited to a more conventional back or end panel of a rectangular island.

Contrasting Cabinet Doors

Contrasting – or two-tone – coloured cabinet doors have been a popular design feature in kitchens for some time. But contrasting texture takes this look to the next level. Juxtaposed against smooth painted or wood doors, fluting works well on a short run of cabinets, or on a floor-to-ceiling full height cupboard, rather than across the whole kitchen. The vertical lines of this accent can help create a sense of height to a room, so it’s a great idea for a smaller room.

Fluted kitchen doors also add visual interest to a space, whether that’s bringing character to a heritage design or complementing minimal detail of a modern look. But it’s worth bearing in mind that a fluted finish may be a little more tricky to keep clean, thanks to the texture, so you may want to reserve this for areas away from the cooker, hob or sticky fingers.

A Fresh Take on Internal Detail

If you love the fluted look but don’t want to commit to it too strongly, it works wonderfully as an internal storage detail. Try adding a stylish twist to drawers or doors within a breakfast cabinet or your made-to-measure drinks cabinet, for example. Pantries and larder cupboards don’t just have to be functional and you could add this detail to them, too. Talk to our designers for more ideas.

Gorgeous Glazing

Fluted, ribbed and reeded glass is all part of this textured trend – and can add subtle interest as a cabinet door, internal dividing door or splashback. Its slight opaque nature is a great way to let the light through but offers a little privacy too – whether you want to zone a room or hide the clutter in your cupboards! Splashbacks also look fabulous in reeded glass – but we recommend going with the smooth side facing outward making it easier to wipe clean.

Fluted Kitchen Finishing Touches

With fluted glass being so fashionable, it’s a breeze to find coordinating accessories. Glassware of all styles, including bowls, jugs and carafes, can look great on an open shelf, to pick out the glazing used in cupboards or doors. And reeded glass pendant lights above an island or dining table can really dial up the style factor. Slatted wall panels are also a great way to incorporate the trend if you want to keep your cabinetry neutral and completely timeless – offering an alternative on traditional tiling.
