Miele – the ultimate kitchen appliances for your home

At Davonport we’re proud to be able to work with suppliers of some of the highest quality appliances and products from the world of kitchens. With that in mind, we’re shining a light on some of our best-loved suppliers, their products and the amazing work they do.

This week we spoke with Cem Kal, Product Manager for Cooking at Miele GB.

For the uninitiated, please give us some background on Miele

Miele is the world’s leading manufacturer of premium domestic appliances including cooking, baking and steam-cooking appliances, refrigeration products, bean-to-cup coffee machines, dishwashers, laundry, and floor care products. Founded in Germany in 1899, Miele remains a family-owned and run business, now in its fourth generation. Miele’s philosophy is ‘Immer Besser’ which means to be forever better in everything it does, always aiming to improve the lives of its customers.

What’s new at Miele at the moment, or what are you just about to launch?

We introduced our latest Generation 7000 range of appliances in 2019, the biggest product launch in our company’s 120-year history, which involved updating almost every product category.  The new ovens all offer touch controls, which intuitively guide you through the cooking process with a wide choice of automatic programmes to eliminate guesswork. In October, we will be launching new freestanding bean-to-cup coffee machines, which deliver barista-quality coffee at home.  You can choose from a wide selection of beverages including espresso, cappuccino, flat white, macchiato or latte as well as a wide variety of teas.

Aside from great products, what else should people know about Miele?

As a result of COVID-19, our Experience Centres in Abingdon and London can’t fully open, so until then we are offering one-to-one consultations with our expert advisors to help customers choose the appliances that are right for them and best suited to their lifestyle. These can happen via telephone or video call and we are also able to offer socially-distanced in-person consultations at our Oxfordshire Miele Experience Centre and Harrods London Concession.  We have our own blog called derKern which is packed full of design inspiration, recipes and hints and tips – a useful resource for both existing and potential Miele customers.

When homeowners install a new kitchen, what do you think is one of the biggest mistakes they make and how could it be avoided?

Probably the biggest mistake is choosing appliances to fit in with a kitchen design. Research and decide on the appliances you want at the start of the kitchen planning process. Buying a kitchen is a significant investment and you will want to live with it for many years so make sure you are aware of all the latest developments and options in appliances that could make you a better cook or make your life easier.  For example, be open to new ideas such as cooking with steam or an induction hob before automatically choosing gas just because that is what you had before.

What are your best selling products currently and why do you think they are so popular?

As mentioned earlier, our new Generation 7000 products are doing well. In this appliance range, we were able to innovate and bring new, never-seen-before features to the marketplace. We launched full surface induction hobs, giving you freedom whilst cooking as well as updating the way our Steam, Steam Combination and Steam-Microwaves gently cook your food. These remain amongst the most popular choices for appliances due to their intuitiveness – giving consumers a new found confidence in the kitchen.

What Miele products do you have in your own home?

In my home, we have a Miele oven, washing machine and vacuum cleaner. We love all of our appliances for how easy they make our lives, from the automatic TwinDos on the washing machine that we can trust our most valuable clothes with, to the automatic programmes on the oven which gives us perfect Yorkshire puddings every time!

Tell us about the style of your own kitchen…

Our kitchen at home is styled in a traditional English way. It has served us well and we are certainly looking to update it after 15 years’ use!

What one improvement would you make to it if you could?

We would add lots more appliances and have tall larder units to better suit our busy family life.

Which product from another supplier could you not live without in your own kitchen?

Our beautiful Reidel wine glasses, they really enhance the flavour of the wine. We would love to add more to the collection!

What’s your favourite Davonport kitchen and why?

I’m a big fan of the Tillingham range as the classic cabinetry exudes effortless luxury. It works well in both bolder tones as well as more neutral colour palettes. I love the bespoke barn conversation as it’s got real personality and I’m obviously delighted to see a number of our products in situ!
